WA Restaurant of the Year, Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide 2024

WA Restaurant of the Year, Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide 2024

We are over the moon to announce that Millbrook Winery Restaurant has been awarded WA Restaurant of the Year in the 2024 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide – for the second time no less!

Previously, our Restaurant was also crowned WA Restaurant of the Year in the 2022 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide.

This win highlights the incredible work that the team do, as they continue to push culinary boundaries, producing epic, award-winning food, all while staying true to the Millbrook ethos of farm-to-table. Led by Executive Chef Guy Jeffreys and Head Chef Justin Wong, the team solely relies on the Estate's orchard and one acre garden to source all the Restaurant's fruit and vegetables. Cultivated by Head Gardener Mitchell Seward, the seasonal produce inspires the ever-changing menu and is championed alongside locally sourced meat and fish.

Showcasing the diversity of fine dining across Australia, the annual Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide celebrates the most exciting and exceptional dining experiences to be found for the upcoming year:

"Lunch at Millbrook is saddled with considerable expectations, which only seem to build as you make the hour-long drive to this seachanger's fantasy in the Perth Hills. Thankfully, the team is up to the task, from the cellar-door crew that bid you welcome to the cheery waitstaff that patrol the cosy upstairs dining room. The kitchen is also in on the act, highlighting ingredients grown in the property's sprawling garden."

"Italy is a key influence; scallops get flash-cured in acqua-pazza-like fermented tomato water, while blistered porchetta slices share plate space with braised Calabrian white beans. A delicious frugality is also in effect. Foraged weeds are immortalised in a flaky spanakopita just as windswept mandarins become meringue-crowned curd. Snappy estate wines, like the buy-in, are priced so all can play, although beer side projects are becoming more regular on the drinks list. A lunch (and day trip) to be savoured."

A huge shoutout is also due to the wonderful front of house team, led by Restaurant Supervisor Deb Nicholson, who ensure that every Millbrook experience is as amazing as ever.

A number of other highly esteemed restaurants across the country were awarded Top Restaurant for their State, and we are very proud to be considered at the very top, alongside these incredible venues. Not only that, but for our Restaurant to be featured so highly for the second time is a feat not lost on us, and we are overjoyed at this recognition on such a prestigious national platform.

Speaking on the award, Executive Chef Guy Jeffreys said: "Gourmet Traveller is the one everyone wants to win. To take it out again, but with a completely new team, is very humbling and consolidates our mission statement to not buy fruit or vegetables."

Millbrook Head Chef Justin Wong

Justin Wong joined Millbrook Winery as Head Chef in June 2022 and he has been integral in achieving the latest WA Restaurant of the Year win.

Justin started in the industry in 2009 washing dishes as a part-time job whilst studying at university. Realising he was probably more useful with a knife than a pen, Justin began cooking seriously under the tutelage of Kurt Sampson at both Pata Negra and Propeller. Since then, he has worked at other esteemed venues in Perth such as Lulu La Delizia and Shadow Wine Bar, before taking on his own kitchens at both Tiny’s and Vinotto.

Justin is incredibly passionate about creating dishes from the produce grown on the property’s garden and 90-year-old orchard, as well as making the most of the strong relationships already forged with local artisans. He relishes the challenge of changing the menu not based on trends, but on what the garden gives.

Justin celebrated at the awards dinner in Sydney last night. Reflecting on this epic win, he said: "On behalf of the entire team at Millbrook Winery, we are incredibly humbled to receive this award. It is a massive recognition for doing the things we do, and the overall ambition of our ethos. Thank you to Gourmet Traveller and all their sponsors. Onwards and upwards we continue!"

The full results will be published in the Gourmet Traveller magazine, which is published on Monday 28 August.
